Skateistan- Skating For A Good Cause

by Max on May.10, 2012, under Uncategorized

Skateboarder’s have always proudly gave back to the community, helping others less fortunate than us through the powerful social bonding tool that is skateboarding. Charity skateboarding events are a regular part of the skateboarding calendar, even when it’s a non charity event you can put money on it that there’s some form of charity benefiting from the event, we can all be proud of what we do for communities and the thousands of pounds (maybe millions) that the skateboarding community produces each year.

Skateistan began as a Non Governmental Organization in Kabul in 2007 and has since progressed into an international non profit organisation, giving the gift of skateboarding and educational programming in Cambodia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Their mission statement is to use skateboarding as a tool for empowerment in a place it hasn’t existed before. To give young people a voice and to give local people agency to shape projects according to need. A pretty powerful yet simple message, to give these kids something to be proud of whilst giving them a chance in life despite their war torn country.

So how did this start? I hear you ask. Well it started through two Aussie lads who started skating in Kabul and were soon surrounded by adoring kids and children, mesmerised by the two white men performing tricks on skateboards. And using the three boards they brought to Afghanistan, they set up a small skate school. To find out the rest of the story visit http://skateistan.org/content/our-story

But that’s just the start of Skateistan’s work, it’s much more than simply teaching kids how to skate, its giving them a new life, giving them direction and most importantly, giving them hope. It gives them experience of interacting with different cultures, educational and personal empowerment programmes. The work that Skateistan are currently undergoing is nothing short of awesome, supplying skateparks and skate lessons to kids in Cambodia, grass roots skate lessons in Pakistan and a state-of-the art skating facility in Northern Afghanistan.

So please give generously to this amazing cause, help skateboarding change lives and give underprivileged children a chance in life by donating to  http://skateistan.org/content/donate

Fail To Win By Globe!

by Max on May.02, 2012, under Uncategorized

The super generous guys at Globe are giving away free gear to the top 3 people who have smashed themselves up whilst boarding… and I mean SMASHED here are a few of my favourite snaps of you beautiful skaters destroying your limbs and vital organs. Just as we like it.

1.Man with unrealistically large ankle

This is what could happen if you try to get just a little too much air, or perhaps what would happen if you tried to land off the top of a skyscraper, to even think that this guy got this injury from anything less than a plane crash is mind boggling, although to be fair the bruising round his foot looks a bit like a really cool tattoo, he probably didn’t think that, but hey you gotta look on the bright side sometimes! I mean you only tore every single ligament in your ankle and foot and fractured your foot for goodness sakes…. Actually that’s pretty damn horrendous come to think of it.

2.Casually breaking your neck guy

Now this is impressive, despite this being a big wave surfing accident, the guys getting reps for breaking his neck whether you like it or not. Probably the most painful thing imaginable, all for the sake of boarding? Epic. I also like it how he’s parked himself in a No Parking bay, still living on the edge despite life threatening injuries!. 7 months later and he was discharged from hospital and all is well now for this true hero of boardsports.

3.Mr Bendy Arm

This picture reminds me of the wobbly pencil trick you did when you were a kid. Smashing your arm into the ground incredibly hard is rarely a good idea, as the arm that appears to have been put in a food blender displays. But you’d think that after you destroy one of your limbs you probably wouldn’t be bothered about much else apart from the intense pain in your arm and getting to the hospital, right? Not this lad as you can see in this photo he’s just casually texting away repulsing the opposite gender with cringe worthy texts as per usual. Making his way to the hospital in his own time, such composure and calmness for a kid who throws himself into big solid objects during his spare time. P.S we recommend going to hospital immediately if your arm ever resembles the letter S.

by Max on Apr.04, 2012, under Uncategorized

At just the tender age of 12 years old, skating protégé Tom Schaar has made skating history and achieved eternal glory within skating

Etnies staple web belt-blue

circles for becoming the first ever person to complete a 1080 successfully.

Here he is filmed performing what has been described as “The holy grail” of skateboarding http://www.redbullusa.com/cs/Satellite/en_US/Video/first-ever-1080-skate-021243187233817, the biggest names in skating have also had their say and have given credit to the humble 12 year old from Malibu, California.

Tony Hawk tweeted: “In the last year I’ve seen Shaun White try 1080s & Mitchie Brusco crash-land a few. Tom Schaar nailed it.” Not b

ad getting some reps from the greatest skater of all time

Bob Burnquist also had his say: “Tom Schaar is a little giant and a spinning machine. Amazing. Look forward to learning a lot from him in the future.” One of the greatest skaters of all time talking about learning from a 12 year old, this shows how much of a prodigy this young man is.

The feat was performed on Megaramp, Woodward West in Tehachapi, with the ramp being specially developed for the stunt which fe

atured a monster 70 ft roll in ramp, a 50 yard gap and then a 27 ft quarterpipe.

So this boy’s the real deal, remember the name Tom Schaar, you may be repeating that name a heck of a lot in the years to come. You heard it here first!

And the kid obviously has good taste, he’s seen wearing some Etnies gear towards the end of the shoot looking majorly cool after stunting a 1080!

5 Worst Skate Videos Of All Time

by Max on Mar.28, 2012, under Uncategorized

One of the best things about skating is the uniqueness of the videos that people produce through skating, unique locations, sick music, famous skaters and throwing ollies off of high tower buildings will always result in copious amounts of entertainment.

Unfortunately, these guys didn’t quite get it, these are the suckiest collection of skate videos around, as to why these kids even posted this will forever have me wondering, even if it’s meant for humour, it’s not funny! You just look like a Pillock.

So if you’re looking to make your first skate video sometime soon, please watch these and take notes of what not to do, for our sakes as well as yours.
1. Our first submission is this video filmed from Japan, two 16 year old’s with far too much time and not enough friends buy a board and decide that despite no skating experience whatsoever, they can make a killer video, im all for optimism, but not in this case. To be fair there friend towards the end can at least be named a skater, he busts a few kickflips and similar standard flip moves that at least represents Skateboarding.
The absolute worst thing about this video is the kids in it, these guys are straight up nerds, fat kid in the orange top spends the entire time grinning like he’s just won another fight on his beloved Warcraft game and his tall gangly mate appears to have stolen my Uncles glasses from when I was a kid. And as for the music and the start of the video…. Why? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0UO5l5vl0I
2. These guys aren’t as much skating as they are kicking a skateboard around a skate park, they’re not even as good as pathetic, but at least they are actually riding the board for a length of distance, unlike the video above, bless them, they had ambition, but these guys couldn’t get air on a cliff.

But this time the music isn’t as strange and the guys in it seem pretty cool, decent fellas, they just completely blow at skateboarding, that’s all.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWA1uyxSq6c&feature=related

3. This compilation video is actually one of the most entertaining skate videos ive ever watched, for all the wrong reasons, in effect its just a mix of bails, collisions and all round fails, you can’t knock these guys for commitment and most of them are probably pretty skilled (apart from the dog) but unfortunately it’s just all gone very wrong for these guys.

Not my favourite music in the world, but there’s some pretty spectacular fall’s here and if your not one for broken bones, then this may not be the video for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmG-0SfRTeM&feature=related
4. Aaaaand this compilation video is tame as it gets, a rendition of young boys falling over, not really bailing, not smashing into the ground off 30 ft halfpipes, but just falling over, it reminded me of Lemmings,  although maybe im being a bit tough on these young nippers.

Plus since when did he get a hold of this music? Another bizzare choice of audio, especially for a young kid that probably made this video, although I suppose they’re having fun with their boards and that’s what it’s all about, they just should never post a video ever again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4QHZ1CP708&feature=related
5. Since when did skating represent throwing your board through a hoop and then waiting for it to land back on its wheels and then jump onto it and claim it as a trick? Theres a big difference between creativity and stupidity and these guys are totally stupid.

It’s funny (ish) at times and some of the clips show certain amounts of technique and style, but most of the time these guys are just ollieing onto, into, through a innate object with no relevance to skating whatsoever, not to mention that half the things these guys are trying to do they just fail at anyway, the music reminds me of Spandau Ballet, enough said. http://vimeo.com/11753807

Have your say on your favourite!….  or most hated, depends how you look at it.

So I suppose you guys are “inspired” now and need a sick new board to make your new video on, and there’s no better boards around right now then blossoming skate brand Enjoi’s new range! Skating Legends Of The 21st Century

by Max on Mar.21, 2012, under News, Products

Marc Johnson(pictured)- The people’s skateboarder if there ever was one, he’s a former alcoholic who’s now been sober for 3 years, an idol to all people who are/have been down, but despite this and his nicotine addiction, he’s still one of the most talented skaters on the planet, his ambidextrous switch style stance that he became renown for in the 90’s stood him in good stead to grab the skateboarding world by the scruff of the neck and show the world how he does it. It was around this time he created Enjoi skateboarding, who were praised for their fresh new approach to skate fashion with their refreshing and comical clothing, Marc’s since left the company, but his wicked sense of humour still remains with the company. His technical abilities and natural talent rival those of the best of all time, these skills have earned his abilities the tag of “supernatural” and if you think that he’s been an alcoholic and is still an avid smoker, this man certainly deserves that tag. Thrasher Magazine Skater of the Year 2007. Check out our awesome range of Enjoi products at http://www.urbansurfer.co.uk/31_enjoi

Ryan Sheckler(pictured)- The next superstar of skateboarding. Still at the tender age of 22, the world truly is Ryan’s oyster, with three X Games gold medals under his belt already (the first he won when he was just 13!!!) he’s set to break every record in the book. Along with the 3 X Games medals he’s won Action Sports Tour’s Athlete of the year award in 2005, Arby’s Action Sports Athlete of the year in 2006, in 2007 he became the first ever Skateboarder to win a AST Championship three years running. Then casually took home another X Games Gold medal in 2008 aswell as winning the Thrasher Magazine Bail or Bust, one of his greatest ever wins, he claims. Although he has became much more interested in money making and the Business side of his life, he still had time to win a Gold at the 2010 X Games  again in between promoting his MTV hit show Life of Ryan and promoting brands such as Etnies and now even running his own foundation.  No matter what happens, this star of Skateboarding will forever be a legend of the sport. Get the same equipment that the legends wear at http://www.urbansurfer.co.uk/9_etnies

Chris Cole(pictured)- The unsung hero of skateboarding. This man is hardly the most celebrated skater around, but looking at the list of awards you’ll find it hard to understand why, winning a grand total of 22 major titles/awards including X Games titles,

Maloof money cup titles and Street league titles, not only this but he’s only the 2nd person ever to win the Thrasher Magazine Skater of the year twice,

no mean feat by any means, amongst his list of accomplishments he recently became DC shoes new pro in 2011. Statesville, North Carolina can sure be proud of their most famous skating export, not only has he drifted through his 12 year career winning shedloads of accolades.

But he’s now started up his own skate company and opened his own skate shop, doing whatever he can to leave a lasting and positive impression on his beloved sport, a skater through and through who doesn’t get the credit he deserves. So here’s to you Mr.Chris Cole, you are a skating legend of the 21st century. You can also get the same gear as Chris from the cheapest boardwear retailer in the UK at http://www.urbansurfer.co.uk/10_dc-shoe-co

Tony Hawk (pictured) – The icon. You don’t need me to tell you about Tony “Birdman” Hawk, as you know this guy has set the standard of skating for the past 29 years, he’s one of the most recognizable athletes on the planet due to his sheer domination of the skate world in the 90’s and the 00’s, he simply dwarfs everybody else accomplishments , not to mention he has one of the most iconic video game series of all time and has raised million upon millions for charity. I mean the guy has his own amusement park ride… He shot to the eye of the sporting world by famously completing the first ever 900 degree rotation in skating history, a true milestone in his life as well as being a major milestone in skating, the day he landed that jump (at the eleventh attempt) his empire began and his life would never be the same. Just in case you were wondering the man’s won 9 X Games gold’s amongst an avalanche of other titles/awards/accolades/anything to do with winning. The Birdman has endorsed and sponsored what seems like an endless list of products, but one of his more recent endorsements is his endorsement of Nixon Watches, claiming he’s always wanted to work with these guys and has been a massive fan of them ever since he first set eyes on his Nixon Revolver. We as skaters will always be in debt to Tony , as he’s made the sport what it is today, he’s single handedly revolutionized the sport and this without a shadow of a doubt makes him a skating legend, not just of the 21st century, but of all time. Wear the same watch as the greatest skater of all time from the cheapest site on the internet! At http://www.urbansurfer.co.uk/mens-watches/27535-nixon-revolver-watch-white-white.html

Berrics’ rules include no feet on the ground, no bonelesses, no grabs, no handplants and no tricks that slide on the ground if your opponent has popped his trick. The last letter gets two tries and offensive toe drag gets one do over.

The Berrics is not just a frequently-re-designed US skatepark but also a website. By 2009, the site attracted more unique visitors than the websites of every major skateboard magazine and ESPN.com action sports section.
